It's hard to believe the Shelby County Commissioners are not going to back Russell financially. They must have been warned not to by a lawyer, unless she was just flat out unpopular with them to begin with. (Unlikely.) That whole region of Texas has been ruled heavy handedly by devious lawmen and politicians for years. Racism continues to thrive unabated there. A lot of the rural towns up that way seem to be cut off from the rest of the world and pretty much do as they please, not surprising, given all the freedom and money the decrepit War on Drugs affords them. It's good to see that someone like Gupta and the ACLU is finally trying to deal with such a town because, as it is, Teneha, and towns like it here in Texas, can be just plain scary. And I can promise you one thing, the ACLU is surely about as unpopular as it gets with them all right now.

I don't think I have commented so much in such a short period of time so RoTD wins top marks from me! r/business is truly a minefield but anything about banks and Wall Street banks seem fair game there at the moment. I will expand on bmeckel's question by editing that comment.

Imagine if you actually became a regular commenter on here. But that might be me reaching for the stars there... Some weeks, r/business also wants real estate news. Other weeks, they'll bonk you on the head for daring to offer them any. They also want news from only certain sources. I learned real fast not to include anything from *alternet.org.* ;) I kind of have a bit of fun with them sometimes.

Actually, it seems that they're in the midst of some big changes. I'm wondering if it's been sold. I'm okay with the new look, as it's not so junky and subjects are a bit more organized and easier to find. But some big shakeup is going on behind the scenes, because they just introduced a "women" section, although they don't seem quite sure where to go with it yet. Just out of curiosity, what's usually the first publication you check each day? And what are your top three favorite online publications, maybe not because of submission reasons, but just because you personally like them?

I'm surprised you've listed *sciencedaily.* I like it, but it seems to be de rigueur for some subreddits to run it down and blow it off as worthless and silly rubbish. Have any opinions about why some might do that? Why do you prefer *The Guardian* over newspapers like *The Independent?* Do you think that, overall, *The Guardian* is better than *The New York Times?*

Yet, I've seen complaints directed at submitters who do not comment on their own submissions, accusing them of simply leaving their submissions to sit there and take up space without helping to get any conversation going about the subject. Such complaints have prompted me to sometimes go back and comment on my own submissions if no one else has bothered or to delete those that have elicited no comments after a certain period of time. It certainly is nice to learn of your opinions on such matters. Are you saying that no one has ever complained to you about you not commenting on your own submissions? Actually, I think I prefer your personal rule.

Mind me asking what particular religion they were about to spread? That's a great story, by the way.

The Guardian is reputable and it's layout is attractive and easy to read.. really pleasing to the eyes. The "comment is free' section has a broad outlook and it's environment section is always worth a visit -new stuff daily. The Independent's layout is hard to follow and too cramped as is the NYT. sciencedaily acts like a aggregator for me - I used it to scan for interesting stuff and try to get better explanation elsewhere, if possible. With science articles, I find that users who are very knowledgeable prefer reputable sites but unfortunately most of these are behind a paywall. sciencedaily offers too brief an explanation which doesn't appeal to them as they seek substantial information.

Somehow, I doubt very much that you shortchanged them.

Hey! I love *A Summer Place,* if you're referring to the song to the movie, which I also love. But of the groups you mentioned, I really like Queen and Dire Straits. Nothing disappointing about *that* music!

No one that i can recall has complaint about my not commenting. I think it's because I don't editorialize in the titles or engage in sensationalism much. I prefer the comments to come from those who have read the article and not just the headline.

Okay, I see what you mean about *sciencedaily.* The information can be interesting, but the hardcore guys in r/science don't appreciate *sciencedaily* sending them to another news aggregator like Yahoo News as a source. *Sciencedaily* is also bad about taking material that's clearly come straight from the advertising department and fashioning it into a 'news' article. But those are usually glaringly obvious. You mention the *Guardian* being good about having something new (feature wise, I assume you mean) daily, especially in environment, which I've noticed and which makes the fact that the *New York Times* is so slow to update when it comes to features that much more obvious and very curious to me. I'm honestly surprised how long the *NYTimes* will go without offering any new features in most of its major sections. It stays on top of news and sports and that's about it. And it's THE major newspaper in the U.S. Blows my mind that it offers so little so haphazardly. I won't ask aabout

No one has complained to me. I've just seen them chew out others and sort of took it as a cue about how things are perhaps suppose to be done. (No one exactly tells you when you first join.) I usually go with the title that comes with the article, unless it's really crummy or there's something about the article that I think needs to highlighted more or in a better way. So are you saying that you write your own headlines but are careful not to sensationalize them? I'm not sure I'm understanding you here. Oh, and about your low profile... Honestly, I always figured that you had another account where you blathered out your opinions about everything under the sun and kept this account just for submitting. I wondered if I was foolish to have both comments and submissions under one name after seeing yours for the first time. None whatsoever. As a content provider I try to stay impartial but the mere fact that I am able to target a specific subreddit with a link means that I'm already trying to influence it's outcome. Anymore personal input would change the msg and tone of the article. The users should decide on the article, not me.

About how long were you on reddit before you discovered that you have a passion for dispersing information? I mean, had this particular propensity of yours surfaced before?

I don't really know but I would hazard a guess that it stated when reddit changed its model and introduced a handful of subreddits.

What did you think at the time about the subreddits being introduced? I mean, did you think it was a good idea or were you that involved yet with the site? Were you commenting more in the beginning, or did your main participation involve submissions or just using it as a place to read interesting topics? And, my apologies for all the sudden questions, but were you more interested in reading the comments or the submissions back then? How about now?

I thought it was a good idea because the top 10 redditors were dominating the only frontpage. We needed some incentives for others to get a mention elsewhere to maintain interest. My main contribution has always been the submission of interesting links and the subreddits provided the avenues for a more focused approach. I try to read both the submissions and the comments back then but the volume is too much nowadays so I am more selective. I will read all the comments of my main links that appear on the frontpage to gauge what redditors want in the near future.

I realize the interview's over and it's a new day, but continuing with avnerd's question, do you have suggestions about ways we could 'advertise' rotd, get the word out about who is being highlighted each day? Unless a mod is being highlighted, subreddits don't particularly take too kindly to us using their submission space to make an announcement, even if it's for one of their popular regulars and could possible benefit them as well. Do you have any suggestions about what we might do that would encourage past rotds to return and participate? Trying to build a regular base has been surprisingly (to me, anyway) difficult and elusive. For example, what could we do to make you want to return and participate (that is, if you were inclined to make comments)? Any advice you might give us will be deeply appreciated.

Try a self post to the main sub reddits inviting questions from users at the start of a rotd daily. Maybe also pm a handful of past rotds asking them to weighin. Also initially all rotd mods to ask at least 3 top level questions based on the submitted profile per rotd otherwise the writeup is not being used efectively. I would return if prompted.

Love the video, thanks max! But not only would one of my cats not deign to sit atop my dog, it wouldn't go within two feet of him. As for the rat, it'd be a goner. Yes. Only when the water becomes too colorful or the smell too overwhelming do they switch to bottled water for a while, and then it's usually distilled for some reason. There are not only huge and numerous gasoline storage tanks underground, but natural gas is stored by pumping it into the caves and tunnels of the salt domes.

It's so good to see you in rotd today. What a delightful surprise! Thanks for the compliment, max. I see you've been stepping in and checking spam again every now and then lately. I always study your approach and usually learn anew from it. I trust you'll let me know when there's an error in my ways. The arbitrary nature of the exercise lends itself to differing interpretations almost daily. Meanwhile, if you don't mind me asking, have you always created your own headlines or is it something you started doing later? I notice that you're really great at coming up with emotion-packed, eye catching headers. Do they come to you off the tip of your head or do you take a bit of extra time with some of them? Do you have any suggestions for me when it comes to submitting? Much of the time, I'm just spinning my wheels. Anything you have to offer will be greatly appreciated.

Moderating r/worldnews is a little tricky goes because of the tendency to push US-centric news but we do our best to stop these - catching them early if we can and if push comes to shove, even stopping the top post upon discovery especially if there are high reported counts. I scan the article and see if the headline is accurate or/and punchy enough to do it justice. If not I re-word it with slightly more info without going overboard and try to avoid editorializing the title and avoid sensationalism as much as possible. I tried using the headlines from the articles and most of the time they are not as successful in attracting readers. But it also depends on the choice of subreddit - r/worldnews r/science are quite strict about editorializing; r/wtf - anything goes except politics! r/pic - best with a catchy title; r/politics - emotive headlines I guess helps - peppered with editorializing of title. Equally important is timing the submission, so check the new queue to see if they are users 'online' - pointless if no-one is there to read it your post, submit to the next best subreddit

We don't know the details, or do you? All we are totally privy to are the results. So yes, that is influencing my judgment. The bank is treating her like she committed an unforgivable crime against humanity. As a result, their actions have now cast them in that particular light.

I see your point, but it's possible and permissible for the same story to be posted to the same subreddit numerous times. (Julian Assange, anyone?) It's also possible for someone to submit an article from the original source at a time when few redditors are around to read it, have it sink to the bottom, and another person come along later and choose the best from another, secondary source. The submitter can't always be aware that a piece has been altered or in what way.

The way it's been presented in my culture, *Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,* has given males a free pass, while special classes are held teaching women that they'll be a lot less disappointed in and happier with their romantic male partners if they expect a lot less and accept that's just the way they're hardwired.

Water machines aren't that common in some states. There are entire counties where such things don't exist.

No one has been able to drink the water near where I live for years. Everyone either has to buy their water or fill up large containers of it at friends or relatives' who live near a good supply & haul it back home.

It's odd, in the 90s, there were water machines at least in the larger towns of rural counties. Don't know why they disappeared.
